A splendid catalogue for a single exhibition who brings together for the first time ever the sculptures bough by Velázquez on his second Italian journey (1649 to 1651) to decorate the Alcázar of Madrid.
It is a selection (76 pieces) of the finest works of classical antiquity culled from collections of great Roman families such as the Medici, Ludovisi, Borghese and, above all, the works brought together by popes Julius II to Innocence X in the Vatican's Belvedere Gallery.
This selection of bronze and plaster casts adorned the Alcázar until the 1734 fire.
