La richesse et la diversité des objets moulés en plâtre est souvent méconnue: sculptures (toutes époques et civilisations confondues), objets archéologiques (mais aussi gemmes, monnaies, sceaux), éléments d'architecture et maquettes, statuaire religieuse, modèles d'anatomie, de zoologie, de botanique, d'ethnographie, d'anthropologie, de paléontologie, de mathématique, masques funéraires, plâtres d?artistes, plâtres publicitaires, plâtres décoratifs ... Les objets appartenant pour la plupart aux collections de l'UCL sont présenté par Bernard Van den Driessche avec la complicité du regard photographique de Jean-Luc Tillière.

Deze tentoonstelling presenteert prachtige 17de-, 18de- en 19de-eeuwse gipsen afgietsels van de fraaiste beelden uit de Oudheid. Naast kopieën van de beroemde sculpturen van het Parthenon, de "Apollo Belvedere" en de "Venus van Arles", zijn beeldjes van goden en dieren, en bustes en portretten van Griekse en Romeinse edelen en filosofen te zien. De tijdloze schoonheid van de klassieke beeldhouwkunst staat centraal. Foto's, prenten en impressies van de Grand Tour, 17de-eeuwse kabinetten, een 18de-eeuwse kunstacademie, collegezalen en museumzalen waar de beelden ooit prijkten, geven een beeld van de rol die de gipsen speelden in de wetenschap, kunstbeschouwing en kunstonderwijs in de afgelopen vierhonderd jaar.

Speciaal voor deze tentoonstelling wordt een aantal gipsen beelden gerestaureerd. U kunt zelf een kijkje nemen in het restauratie-atelier:'Restauratie op zaal' , dinsdag t/m vrijdag van 19 februari - 18 mei. See website

Axel Vervoordt presents the exhibition, taking place at La Chapelle de l'Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. It is the second part of a trilogy which started with the exhibition Artempo: When time becomes Art and which ran at the Palazzo Fortuny in Venice, Italy, between June and November last year. The trilogy will be completed in 2009 with the Venice-based L'Infinito del Non Finito.

Velázquez. Sculptures for the Alcázar. Plastercasts ... 2007/12/14 - 2008/03/30

A single exhibition brings together for the first time ever the sculptures bough by Velázquez on his second Italian journey (1649 to 1651) to decorate the Alcázar of Madrid.
It is a selection (76 pieces) of the finest works of classical antiquity culled from collections of great Roman families such as the Medici, Ludovisi, Borghese and, above all, the works brought together by popes Julius II to Innocence X in the Vatican's Belvedere Gallery.
This selection of bronze and plaster casts adorned the Alcázar until the 1734 fire. With a splendid catalogue !

On A Grand Scale: The Hall of Architecture at 100

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Carnegie Museum of Art's Hall of Architecture, an exhibition surveying its installation of nearly 150 plaster architectural casts will be on view. While most of the large cast collections assembled by museums in the late 19th and early 20th centuries have been sold or dispersed, the Hall of Architecture has remained intact throughout its 100-year history and continues to impress visitors and inspire artists of all ages. The exhibition will feature architectural drawings, period photographs, and ephemera chronicling the history of Andrew Carnegie's creation of the third largest cast collection in the world, as well as address the production of casts in the 19th century and how the Carnegie's casts came to Pittsburgh.

General support for the exhibition program at Carnegie Museum of Art is provided by grants from the Heinz Endowments and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.

Klugheit, Standhaftigkeit und Durchhaltevermögen, womit die ?Alleinerziehende' Penelope ihre Situation meisterte, machten sie zum Vorbild und Ideal für die Frauen der Antike. Die ersten lebensgroßen Statuen von ihr entstanden im frühklassischen Athen (um 470/460 v. Chr.), als die noch junge Demokratie nach den Perserkriegen (480/479 v. Chr.) nach einem neuen Frauenbild suchte. Diese Statuen der ? Trauernden Penelope' sind in sieben Kopien überliefert, die bis auf eine aus der Regierungszeit des Augustus (27 v.-14 n. Chr.) oder kurz danach stammen. Ein langer Bürgerkrieg, den viele Männer nicht überlebten, hatte zu einer größeren Eigenständigkeit der alleingelassenen Frauen geführt. Das Interesse an der Figur der Penelope fiel mit der konservativen Sittenpolitik und den strengen Heiratsgesetzen des neuen Kaisers zusammen.
Die Gipsrekonstruktionen zweier Statuen der ? Trauernden Penelope' bilden den Mittelpunkt der Ausstellung. Sie wurden auf der Grundlage einer neuen Bestandsaufnahme aller antiken Kopien hergestellt. Die wichtigsten fünf Kopien sind ebenfalls als Gipsabgüsse zu sehen und machen die wissenschaftlichen Überlegungen für die Besucher nachvollziehbar.

Colour in Greek and Roman Antiquity.

After Munich, the Vatican, and Basel the exhibition was presentend in Amsterdam.
It is almost impossible for us to imagine that the white marble or limestone sculptures and the drab clay figurines of Antiquity were often painted in many bright colours. The ancient temples were also painted. So Antiquity was much more colourful than what we see of it today. Many colourful objects on loan from collections in the Netherlands and elsewhere will illustrate this fact in the exhibition COLOUR!

The exhibition will include several large sculptures which are completely covered in striking colours. So this is what the sculptures looked like in Antiquity! In addition to these large-scale, monumental sculptures, many other objects will also be exhibited: Greek pottery, fine terracotta figurines, Etruscan urns and decorations from Etruscan temples - all painted in gaudy, conspicuous colours. The objects - large and small - will give the visitor a glimpse of the multi-colourful world of Classical Antiquity and illustrate the three themes of the exhibition: Temples, Gods and Graves.
